The life cycle of any gas or oilfield falls into 3 distinct categories; Firstly, initial production rate is up at the start. Next, production rate is fairly constant, and any potential drops are offset by drilling more wells.
Thirdly, well productivity decreases and cannot be offset by drilling more wells. At this point in well history, stimulation procedures must be applied to enhance well productivity by removing natural drilling induced barriers to the flow of hydrocarbons.

Well productivity can be enhanced by enhancing permeability of the reservoir rock and lowering viscosity of the crude. Existing well stimulation technologies include; Mechanical (hydraulic fracturing), Thermal (heat flooding) and Chemical (Acidizing, Microemulsion breakers).
Technically, acidizing involves injection of an acid containing substance to the well in order to expand fractures and pores in the near well zone or to remove damage caused by clay swelling.
